Short description

Last Round is a twin-stick survival shooter where every perk is a playing card. Survive round after round in the Cylinder, a brass-ringed pit under a cursed saloon. Every round you clear, the skeleton Dealer lays three cards on the felt, and the cards you keep also score as a poker hand.

Long description

Somewhere under a saloon that shouldn’t exist there’s a pit called the Cylinder: a stone floor, a brass ring, and six holes that never stop spitting out trouble. The Drifter drops in with a six-shooter and nothing to lose.

Every round is a gunfight. Candles with a grudge lob fire, slugs fire the shotgun shells they live in, poker chips skitter and shoot, buzzards snipe from above, and powder kegs charge in and blow. Roll through the bullets, flip a card table for cover, and when there’s nowhere left to stand, call their Bluff and wipe the screen clean.

The sixth shot in the chamber is the Last Round, and it hits hardest. Reloading is a gamble too: click in the gold and the gun refills at once, miss and you only load half.

Clear a round and the Dealer lays three cards on the felt. Every perk is a playing card. Its suit is your build (Lead, Grit, Fortune or Hex) and its rank is its power, and the cards you keep score as a poker hand: a pair, a straight, a flush that unlocks its suit’s capstone. Brass cards bring new guns: a double-barrelled Scattergun, a Winchester, a drum-fed Rattler, a Sunset Flare.

Every sixth round is a Showdown with Old Six, a revolver cylinder in a sheriff’s hat. Win, and the High Stakes deal brings Aces and Jokers. Lose, and the Cylinder Gazette prints your obituary.

Features

  • 52 perk cards and 4 Jokers. Suit is your build, rank is its power, and your best five cards score as a poker hand. Five of a suit unlocks that suit’s capstone.
  • The Last Round. The final shot in every gun hits hardest. Time your reload in the gold for an instant refill, or miss and load half.
  • 8 guns. Peacemaker, Scattergun, Winchester, Rattler, Sunset Flare, Old Thunder, Last Word, and a Gatling you have to earn. Carry three and swap on the fly.
  • Enemies that fight like gunslingers. They flank, keep their distance and use cover. Only the Powder Keg charges, because blowing up is its whole plan.
  • A practice round with the Dealer. First-timers get a short shooting-gallery lesson: shoot, roll through bullets, hide behind a table and gamble a reload. Skip it any time, or replay it from the title screen.
  • Roll, flip, Bluff. Dodge-roll through bullets, flip card tables into cover, and Bluff to clear every bullet on screen.
  • The Showdown. Old Six spins his chambers every sixth round. Win the Showdown and the High Stakes deal brings Aces and Jokers.
  • Named synergies. Ten of them, like Pinball Wizard (Ricochet and Static) and Russian Roulette (Coin Flip and Six Feet Under).
  • Hand-made pixel art. 480×270, a 52-colour palette, every sprite drawn in Aseprite.
  • A spaghetti-western score. Whistle, twangy guitar and saloon piano, plus about fifty sound effects, all synthesised in the browser.

VI · Background

Why a deck of cards

Survival shooters live or die on the upgrade you pick between fights. The loop in Last Round is deliberately short, so the depth had to come from that pick. A deck of cards gave it three layers that each read on their own: what the card does, the build its suit belongs to, and the poker hand its rank helps you make.

The gunplay borrows its grammar from Enter the Gungeon: a dodge roll you can trust, a screen-clearing blank (here, the Bluff), tables you can flip, and a hit that wipes every bullet on screen so you get a breath. The Last Round and the gamble of the timed reload are Last Round’s own.

Art

The game renders at 480×270 and scales by whole numbers only. Every sprite, from the Drifter’s four-way run cycle to the Dealer shuffling his deck, is drawn in Aseprite from Lua scripts, against a locked 52-colour palette of stone, brass, felt and blood.

Sound

The score is a spaghetti-western set: a whistle and a twangy guitar over a galloping rhythm for the fights, a honky-tonk piano for the Deal, and brass stabs and toms for the Showdown. There are no audio files. Every note and every sound effect is synthesised and rendered in the browser while the game loads.
